Yankees Spring Training Notes

Gerrit Cole shines early
Gerrit Cole has made two appearances for the Yankees this spring and he has looked dominant in both. He’s given up no runs in 3 innings so far. He has looked extremely sharp and comfortable in the Yankee uniform. Cole is arguably the best pitcher in baseball and is ready to take the ball on opening day.

Sevy leads pitching issues
Luis Severino is out for the season as he underwent Tommy John surgery last week. James Paxton will be out for some time also with a cyst on his spine. Domingo German will not be eligible to pitch until June 5th due to his domestic violence suspension.

Stanton and Judge health
Giancarlo Stanton and Aaron Judge are both dealing with injuries and are questionable for Opening Day. Stanton is dealing with a calf injury and Judge a shoulder. Manager Aaron Boone expresses optimism for both players today. It will be important for both men to be healthy this season.

Andujar is back
Miguel Andujar missed most of the season in 2018 after tearing his labrum but he’s back and healthy. Andujar has worked out in left field this spring and has looked very comfortable. He has also continued to work at third base and even first base. Andujar could see a lot of time in left field.

Back of the Rotation
The Yankees have a lot of interesting options for the back end of the rotation with the injuries and German suspension. The options include Clark Schmidt, Jonathan Loaisaga, Michael King and Devi Garcia. Jordan Montgomery has returned and looks very sharp. He is expected to be the Yankees 4th starter to open the season.

Rotation Help ?
With Luis Severino out for the year is it possible the Yankees turn to the trade market for help ? It’s possible but not likely right now. As the season goes on that could change. The Yankees could re open talks with the Tigers regarding Matthew Boyd. If the Indians decide to sell Mike Clevinger could be an option.
